A new sound is emerging from Amsterdam. Composer and bandleader Tyn Wybenga, the “Duke Electronington” of the Dutch scene, composes with his band’s improvisations—sampling, reshaping and orchestrating them into new works. On stage, those same musicians step back inside these reimagined compositions, bringing to life music built from the echoes of their own playing. It is an approach that caught the attention of Pat Metheny, who gave Wybenga carte blanche to completely reimagine his landmark debut album Bright Size Life for the 50th edition of North Sea Jazz.
Together, the Brainteaser Orchestra blurs the boundaries between composition, improvisation and electronics, forging a distinctly new Amsterdam sound. Their acclaimed debut earned the German Jazz Prize for Best International Debut Album in 2022, while their eagerly anticipated follow-up, Tonepool Paradox, features the unmistakable voice of Lizz Wright.
