About us

Brainteaser Orchestra does what it was set out to do; lead the way. Wybenga dares to be unapologetic, yet playful, with the orchestra showing great promise both as a group as with its members.

Tyn Wybenga

Tyn Wybenga (1993) — dubbed ‘thefuture-jazz-conductor of today’ by Dutch newspaper NRC — is the creative spider in the web of contemporary Dutch jazz. A composer and conductor who combines bold creativity and blatant swagger, his unique style is influenced by hiphop, classical music, South African music, and a whole lot more. The resulting mix connects genres and instruments in unforeseen ways, pushing musical boundaries. Through his very own Brainteaser Orchestra, Wybenga’s music has become a haven for everything young, fresh and worthwhile in the Amsterdam music scene, which he connects to musicians from all over the world.

Wybenga has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the international jazz world, such as trumpeters Ambrose Akinmusire and Avishai Cohen, the Metropole Orkest and singer Lizz Wright. His unique tapestry of sounds has been rewarded with commissions from the legendary Amsterdam jazzclub the BIMHUIS (2019-2021), November Music Festival (2022), Jazz te Gast Festival (2024) and the North Sea Jazz Festival (2024). In 2022, he received the Deutscher Jazzpreis in the category ‘best debut album’ for his break-out record ‘Brainteaser’.

Wybenga style is ‘a mix of Frank Zappa, Miles Davis and J Dilla, with a modern European twist’. His influences range from old school hard boppers like Lee Morgan and Benny Golson, to classical composers like Stravinsky, and hip-hop legends A Tribe Called Quest. The greatness of past heroes notwithstanding, Tyn takes most inspiration directly from the musicians he works with in Amsterdam.

After studying composition at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Wybenga created the Brainteaser Orchestra (previously known as AM.OK) during a residency at the BIMHUIS. This lauded ‘orchestra of bandleaders’ harbours the greatest talents of his generation, such as saxophonist Kika Sprangers, guitarist Teis Semey and drummer Jamie Peet. The orchestra was established with the aim of capturing the sound of Amsterdam in the 21st century, and has succeeded in doing so to great acclaim.

The Brainteaser Orchestra is Wybenga’s primary creative outlet and source of musical inspiration. Using unique compositional methods relying heavily on sampling, electronics and improvisation, he doesn’t just write for the orchestra, but with the orchestra to create a rich, cinematic and provocative sound collage that has wide appeal.

Brainteaser Orchestra

Something is happening in Amsterdam. Composer and bandleader Tijn Wybenga, the “Duke Electronington” of the Dutch scene, samples the solo voices of his all-stars band to create ever new sound sculptures that their creators then piece together again live. The brain-stimulating sounds of their debut album made it “Best International Debut Album” at the German Jazz Prize 2022, which is why the ensemble formerly called AM.OK is now performing as the “Brainteaser Orchestra”. By pursuing a live blend on stage of the recorded samples, new orchestration and live electronics, Wybenga pushes boundaries of modern jazz and presents a new Amsterdam sound.
