About us

Brainteaser Orchestra does what it was set out to do; lead the way. Wybenga dares to be unapologetic, yet playful, with the orchestra showing great promise both as a group as with its members.

Tyn Wybenga

Tyn Wybenga (1993) — dubbed ‘thefuture-jazz-conductor of today’ by Dutch newspaper NRC — is the creative spider in the web of contemporary Dutch jazz. A composer and conductor who combines bold creativity and blatant swagger, his unique style is influenced by hiphop, classical music, South African music, and a whole lot more. The resulting mix connects genres and instruments in unforeseen ways, pushing musical boundaries. Through his very own Brainteaser Orchestra, Wybenga’s music has become a haven for everything young, fresh and worthwhile in the Amsterdam music scene, which he connects to musicians from all over the world.

Wybenga has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the international jazz world, such as trumpeters Ambrose Akinmusire and Avishai Cohen, the Metropole Orkest and singer Lizz Wright. His unique tapestry of sounds has been rewarded with commissions from the legendary Amsterdam jazzclub the BIMHUIS (2019-2021), November Music Festival (2022), Jazz te Gast Festival (2024) and the North Sea Jazz Festival (2024). In 2022, he received the Deutscher Jazzpreis in the category ‘best debut album’ for his break-out record ‘Brainteaser’.

Wybenga style is ‘a mix of Frank Zappa, Miles Davis and J Dilla, with a modern European twist’. His influences range from old school hard boppers like Lee Morgan and Benny Golson, to classical composers like Stravinsky, and hip-hop legends A Tribe Called Quest. The greatness of past heroes notwithstanding, Tyn takes most inspiration directly from the musicians he works with in Amsterdam.

After studying composition at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Wybenga created the Brainteaser Orchestra (previously known as AM.OK) during a residency at the BIMHUIS. This lauded ‘orchestra of bandleaders’ harbours the greatest talents of his generation, such as saxophonist Kika Sprangers, guitarist Teis Semey and drummer Jamie Peet. The orchestra was established with the aim of capturing the sound of Amsterdam in the 21st century, and has succeeded in doing so to great acclaim.

The Brainteaser Orchestra is Wybenga’s primary creative outlet and source of musical inspiration. Using unique compositional methods relying heavily on sampling, electronics and improvisation, he doesn’t just write for the orchestra, but with the orchestra to create a rich, cinematic and provocative sound collage that has wide appeal.

Brainteaser Orchestra

Stars aligned when the Brainteaser Orchestra was born in 2019. Composer and bandleader Tyn Wybenga (1993) was able to assemble a remarkable collective of his contemporaries, who were all about to run the show in the Dutch jazz scene as bandleaders in their own right. This ‘band of bandleaders’ harbours no less than 13 of the leading lights of a new generation, like guitarist Teis Semey, saxophonist Kika Sprangers and drummer Jamie Peet. Their debut album ‘Brainteaser’ was immediately awarded the Deutscher Jazz Preis in 2022, and dubbed “fresh, vibrant future-jazz” (NRC).

The orchestra achieves remarkable musical synergy of jazz and electronics through Wybenga’s unique composition methods. All of Brainteaser’s pieces start out from fragments of recorded solo improvisations by its members, which Wybenga samples and rearranges to form new music like a hip hop producer, spurning the nickname “Duke Electronicton” – which is more than just a pun. The Brainteaser Orchestra truly is a 21st century update of large jazz ensembles in the tradition of Duke Ellington, mixing jazz with hiphop, electronics and forward thinking classical music.

Wybenga is able to create alternating spotlights for all of the orchestra’s many delights – the sweeping melodicism of violinists George Dimitriu and Yanna Pelser, the rough and rowdy cubism of trombonist Nabou Claerhout and clarinettist Federico Calcagno, and the incandescent rhythms of bassist Allesandro Fongaro – without ever losing unity. Rather, the band’s conglomerate of talent elevates all of its members to greater heights. Wybenga’s compositions act as particle accelerators, clashing together the minds of his musicians and exuding radiant musical waves, creating “hugely inventive and fast-thinking music” (UK Jazz News) which is “subtly layered, richly variegated and compelling” (De Volkskrant).

In the years following their debut album, the orchestra became an innovative and influential force in the European jazz scene, headlining festivals like Südtirol Jazz Festival (AT) and Saalfelden Jazz Festival (DE), and performing at many others, including North Sea Jazz (NL), Jazzahead (DE), and Jazz Sous le Pommiers (FR).

Brainteaser Orchestra inescapably captivates audiences with their “infectious enthusiasm”, according to the French magazine Citizen Jazz, who conclude that “an orchestra like this is an opportunity for anyone who lives for music and adventure.”

At Südtirol Jazz Festival the band underscored their reputation as a band of bandleaders, opening the festival and subsequently filling nearly the entire festival line up with the individual acts of its 13 members.

The second album of the Brainteaser Orchestra is due in 2026, and features music which was commissioned by the legendary Amsterdam jazz club the BIMHUIS for their 50th birthday. For this album, the Brainteaser Orchestra teams up with the internationally renowned saxophonist Otis Sandjö, violin maestro Theo Ceccaldi, hiphop vocalist Pink Oculus, and internationally renowned singer Lizz Wright.
